Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has criticised some individuals he described as former defenders of democracy, in what observers see as a veiled swipe at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Obi expressed concern over what he called a troubling shift among certain figures who were active during Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle, particularly in the era of Sani Abacha.
Obi said it was ironic that individuals who once positioned themselves as champions of democracy and human rights were now, in his view, contributing to actions that undermine those same principles.
He suggested that, by comparison, Abacha, who was widely criticised during his time in power, could now be seen as more respectful of democratic values than some of those who opposed him.
The former presidential candidate described the development as a reflection of how power can reveal true character, warning that the current trajectory poses a risk to Nigeria’s democratic progress.
He concluded by reiterating his message that a better Nigeria remains possible, while his remarks have continued to generate reactions among netizens over their political implications.
