ALGON moves To Digitise Primary Healthcare, Deepen Grassroots Reforms – Daily Trust

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has announced plans to digitalise primary healthcare delivery across all 774 local government areas in the country.It said the move forms part of new efforts to improve service delivery, transparency, and citizen engagement at the grassroots.

This formed part of the key resolutions reached at its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held between July 16 and 17, 2025, at Zuma Hill Resort in Niger State.

In a communiqué issued after the two-day session, ALGON reaffirmed its support for ongoing national healthcare and nutrition reforms, noting that improved collaboration with federal agencies and development partners has started yielding results at the community level.

The association also backed the implementation of a digital healthcare system that would strengthen governance, financing, and accountability across primary healthcare facilities, with support from government institutions and private sector stakeholders.

ALGON said it was committed to expanding partnerships with the Office of the Vice President, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), UNICEF, and other stakeholders involved in the Nutrition 774 Initiative, maternal and child health services, and decentralised birth registration.

The association described the partnerships as critical to achieving improved health outcomes, particularly for poor and vulnerable populations.At the meeting, ALGON also filled key leadership vacancies.Hon. (Engr.) Ikenna Adikibe, Chairman of Oru West LGA in Imo State, was elected Deputy National President.

Two female executives, Hajia Sa’adatu Abdullahi of Kano and Hon. Adeyemo Folashade of Ogun, were elected as Assistant National Organising Secretary and Assistant National Officer respectively.Adikibe, in his remarks, pledged to contribute his administrative experience to help steer ALGON’s current policy direction in line with national priorities.

The NEC praised the Office of the Vice President for focusing the grassroots and hailed the Gates Foundation for its support in expanding access to essential medicines through the Axmed Market Place platform.It pledged continued support for the agreement with NASSCO to expand the National Social Register, describing it as a tool to improve planning and resource allocation at the council level.The meeting was attended by ALGON Board of Trustees members, state chairmen, development partners, and officials from key federal agencies.

A minute of silence was observed in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari and two serving council chairmen who recently passed away, Hon. Lawal Yau’u of Gumel LGA in Jigawa and Hon. Aminu Hamidu of Bakori LGA in Katsina State.
