Anambra Commissioner Defends Soludo’s Closure of Onitsha Market

Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefoh, has defended Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s decision to shut down Onitsha Main Market, saying the state government has the authority to regulate markets and ensure public safety.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Tuesday, Mefoh addressed the public outrage following Monday’s closure, which was in response to traders’ observance of the weekly sit-at-home directive.

“The government of a state has an oversight function over everything, including markets,” Mefoh said. “The governor and government have every right to ensure the smooth running of the state. There is adequate security, and if you visit the market today, you will see what I mean. Anambra is safe for business.”

He added that the “fear factor” associated with the sit-at-home orders was no longer relevant, noting that there was no justification for keeping Onitsha Main Market, one of West Africa’s largest markets, closed.

Governor Soludo’s decision has sparked intense debate, with critics citing economic disruption, while supporters argue it is necessary to maintain order and security.
