ANAMBRA GOVERNMENT CLARIFIES INNOSON SHOWROOM DEMOLITION: “DUE PROCESS WAS FOLLOWED”

By Njenje Media Correspondent | April 23, 2025

NNEWI, ANAMBRA STATE – The Government of Anambra State has issued an official clarification regarding the recent partial demolition of the Innoson Motors showroom in Nnewi, dispelling rumours and affirming that all actions taken were within the ambit of the law.

In a strongly worded statement signed by Dr. Law Mefor, the State Commissioner for Information, the government asserted that the property, registered to Mrs. Eucharia Alaru, was among structures marked for removal in November 2024, after a comprehensive stakeholders’ meeting and public notice.

The structure fell within the 45.72-metre federal highway right-of-way stipulated by the Federal Highway Act of 1971, making it an illegal development.

“Dr. Innocent Chukwuma knows that he was given notice several months ago, and he spoke to several people about it more than three months ago, including a call to the Governor,” the statement noted.

“We cannot have a different set of rules for Innoson and another one for others.”

The government said that the November 1, 2024, consultative meeting, convened by the Commissioner for Works, was followed by an official marking exercise and a November 19 activation of removal notices.

Highlighting Governor Soludo’s support for indigenous industry, the statement recalled that Soludo remains the only Nigerian governor to exclusively use Innoson Vehicle Motors (IVM) as his official fleet, despite “deficiencies and risks” associated with the vehicles.

However, the administration warned that the law must be uniformly applied:

“Making Anambra livable and prosperous requires a state governed by law and order for everyone and not one where exceptions are made for the powerful,” the release stated.

The statement also addressed accusations of political bias, revealing that several other notable properties—including those of Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu and Iyom Bianca Ojukwu—as well as churches and hundreds of buildings, were affected in the same exercise.

“This narrative that Innoson was targeted is false, untrue, and at best, a mischievous political machination.”

Dr. Mefor emphasised that the administration sympathises with affected property owners but insists that no government, acting within the law and with empathy, should be blackmailed into halting necessary development.

The partial demolition took place over four months after the official notices were served, and the government insists it will not be deterred in its mission to ensure urban renewal, safety, and orderly development across the state.

Anambra is on the rise, and according to the statement, “Solution is here and will continue.”
