Aye Cult Rampage in Ogidi Leaves President General and One Other Dead

Armed men believed to be members of the Neo Black Movement, widely known as Aye, unleashed violence in Ogidi, Idemili North, Anambra State, on Friday evening, leaving several residents injured and two people dead, including the community’s President General, Chief Ikwuka Okoye.

The attack is suspected to be retaliation for the death of a prominent Aye member, Emma Amasco, aged twenty five. Amasco, described by locals as both a cultist and petty robber, had reportedly spent Monday and Tuesday robbing unsuspecting residents in Onitsha. On Wednesday, he attempted to sell more than eighteen stolen phones and laptops at Sir Emeka Offor Plaza before being apprehended.

He was later handed over to Ogidi authorities at the request of the traditional ruler and Chief Okoye, who had led recent efforts to drive out cult gangs and violent criminals from the area. During questioning, Amasco allegedly claimed responsibility for multiple killings and provided names of figures within the community he had targeted. He died shortly after, under circumstances that remain unclear, prompting threats of reprisal from his associates.

Chief Okoye was attacked and killed on Friday in what residents believe was an orchestrated revenge strike by Aye members. Exact details of his death have not yet been released.

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the killing and launched a full investigation. In a statement, spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga extended condolences to the people of Ogidi and reaffirmed that initial findings suggest a direct link between Chief Okoye’s murder and the recent arrest and death of Amasco.

Police officers have taken control of the area, gathering eyewitness accounts and intelligence to identify those involved. The Command assured residents that efforts are underway to track down the perpetrators and urged the public to remain calm as investigations progress.
