Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, has announced his withdrawal from the 2027 presidential race, a decision that underscores his commitment to equity, unity, and the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) zoning principles. The declaration came after his return from Abuja, where the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) reaffirmed its decision to zone the 2027 presidential ticket to the South.
Governor Mohammed explained that stepping aside was a sacrifice for national stability and fairness. “What matters most is unity and peace within our party and country. I agree to give the South its chance, for justice and democratic progress,” he said.
The NEC’s resolution, designed to strengthen inclusivity and regional balance, effectively rules out northern aspirants like Mohammed, who was widely seen as a top contender. Despite the strong support he has received nationwide, the governor stressed that upholding democratic values outweighs personal ambition. “I have enjoyed overwhelming encouragement from across Nigeria, but justice must prevail. Every region deserves its time to lead,” he added.
He urged PDP members to unite and approach the 2027 polls with integrity. Political observers view his decision as a mark of statesmanship, enhancing the PDP’s appeal in the South and reinforcing its rotational leadership tradition. The party is expected to confirm its flagbearer at the national convention in Ibadan this November.
