Boko Haram militants launched a heavy assault on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State, overrunning parts of the facility and engaging soldiers in prolonged fighting. Brigadier‑General Oseni Braimah, the commander of the Joint Task Force in the area, was killed during the raid along with several troops, marking one of the deadliest blows to Nigerian military leadership in recent months.

Local officials confirmed the senior officer was among the casualties, while witnesses said insurgents inflicted multiple losses on military personnel before retreating. Vehicles and equipment were reportedly burnt and looted in nearby raids.

The attack comes amid increased assaults by Boko Haram and allied militant groups, who have carried out coordinated strikes in and around communities like Pulka and Benisheikh.

Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters said that troops repelled the broader offensive and fought back strongly, though official confirmation of the general’s death is still awaited.

The incident highlights the persistent insurgency challenge in the northeast, where both soldiers and civilians continue to face repeated attacks.
