Lagos State has been described as “no man’s land” and Nigeria’s economic pride by Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication. Speaking on Arise News on Wednesday, September 3, Bwala defended the heavy concentration of federal projects in Lagos, insisting it should be viewed as a strategic investment in the nation’s growth rather than an act of political favouritism.
Bwala explained that the reported N3.9 trillion worth of federal projects allocated to Lagos in the past two years highlights its unique position as Nigeria’s commercial hub. He stressed that Lagos attracts people and businesses from all over the country, noting its cosmopolitan nature. He added that although Yoruba is the dominant language, the city’s diverse population makes it stand apart from other South-West states.
Drawing parallels with cities like New York, London, and Paris, Bwala argued that prioritising infrastructure in economic centres is a global practice. He pointed out that such investments strengthen national development, saying, “Whatever Lagos benefits, the country benefits.” He concluded by reaffirming Lagos’s status as the hub of commerce and infrastructure, declaring it the pride of Nigeria and essential to the nation’s prosperity.
