Farotimi, who has been vocal about systemic corruption within Nigeria’s legal and political spheres, faced arrest and detention on December 3, 2024, on charges of criminal defamation. His legal battle began after he published a book titled “Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System,” where he allegedly defamed Chief Afe Babalola, a prominent legal figure, by suggesting judicial corruption in high-profile cases. The case, which quickly became a litmus test for freedom of speech in Nigeria, saw Farotimi arraigned on 16 counts of criminal defamation. This led to his remand in prison until the court granted him bail just before Christmas on a N30 million bond.
In their meeting, Farotimi, despite the ordeal, exuded a spirit of optimism. “Dele’s optimism is inspiring, and he’s reinforced my belief that there’s still hope for Nigeria,” Charly Boy shared with Njenje Media News. Farotimi expressed his belief that Nigerians are gradually awakening to demand better governance for their future and the generations to come, a sentiment echoed by many who see his case as indicative of broader issues within the Nigerian legal system.
