Charly Boy and Dele Farotimi
Lagos, Nigeria – January 2, 2025
In a poignant display of solidarity, veteran Nigerian activist and musician Charly Boy visited human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi in Lagos today, 9 days after Farotimi was granted bail following a highly contentious legal ordeal.

Farotimi, who has been vocal about systemic corruption within Nigeria’s legal and political spheres, faced arrest and detention on December 3, 2024, on charges of criminal defamation. His legal battle began after he published a book titled “Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System,” where he allegedly defamed Chief Afe Babalola, a prominent legal figure, by suggesting judicial corruption in high-profile cases. The case, which quickly became a litmus test for freedom of speech in Nigeria, saw Farotimi arraigned on 16 counts of criminal defamation. This led to his remand in prison until the court granted him bail just before Christmas on a N30 million bond.

Charly Boy’s visit today was not just a gesture of friendship but a bold statement against what many perceive as governmental intimidation. “Today is a special day, one that celebrates the power of friendship,” Charly Boy said, emphasizing the camaraderie and support crucial in times of political strife.

In their meeting, Farotimi, despite the ordeal, exuded a spirit of optimism. “Dele’s optimism is inspiring, and he’s reinforced my belief that there’s still hope for Nigeria,” Charly Boy shared with Njenje Media News. Farotimi expressed his belief that Nigerians are gradually awakening to demand better governance for their future and the generations to come, a sentiment echoed by many who see his case as indicative of broader issues within the Nigerian legal system.

Charly Boy, known for his activism and no-holds-barred critique of government policies, hopes that Farotimi’s case will catalyze change. “For the sake of our next generation, let’s hope that we’re indeed waking up and ready to take action,” he stated, calling on Nigerians to engage more actively in the democratic process.
