My upbringing influenced my activism - Falz

Nigerian rapper Falz recently shared insights into how his upbringing shaped his approach to activism. Known for leading the #ENDSARS protest in Lagos in 2020, Falz emphasized that his activism journey began long before that pivotal year.

In an interview on the Menisms Podcast, Falz credited his activism to the influence of legendary musician Fela Kuti and his father, renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana. “Apart from Fela’s records, my dad has been an activist for over 40 years. Having someone like that as a father meant that everywhere I went, someone had a story about what my father did for them. That level of selflessness played a part in who I became,” he explained.

Falz highlighted that this background of activism was always at the forefront of his mind, influencing his music and actions. “I have always been conscious. It’s not like I woke up one day. 2020 was a time when so much was happening that we needed to take further steps from just talking and walking the walk. Of course, I was going to be in front because I had been talking the talk anyway,” he added.

Falz’s reflections offer a deeper understanding of the personal experiences that drive his commitment to social justice and activism.
