A late-night fire outbreak has gutted parts of the plumbing materials section of Head Bridge Market in Onitsha, destroying goods worth millions of naira.

The blaze reportedly started around 11:55 p.m. on Friday and continued into the early hours of Saturday, affecting several shops in one of the city’s busiest trading hubs.

The market, located along the Onitsha–Awka Expressway near the River Niger Bridge, saw traders and residents initially trying to put out the fire before firefighters arrived.

Emergency responders later brought the situation under control, preventing it from spreading to other sections. No casualties were reported, but many traders suffered heavy losses.

The cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed, though some eyewitnesses suspect a power surge.
