Former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, has died in London, United Kingdom. He passed away on Friday after battling severe heart failure linked to complications from urinary cancer, according to SaharaReporters.
Obiano, who governed Anambra between 2014 and 2022, had been in and out of medical care in recent months, with family sources confirming that his condition deteriorated rapidly in the days leading up to his death.
A senior family member, who spoke to SaharaReporters, disclosed that the former governor had been undergoing treatment at a London hospital but “suddenly broke down” before medical personnel ultimately pronounced him dead.
Legal Troubles Before His Death
At the time of his passing, Obiano was preparing to face trial over a nine-count corruption charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The commission accused him of mismanaging more than ₦4 billion belonging to the Anambra State Government during his tenure.
His trial was scheduled to begin on November 25, 2025, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
A Mixed Political Legacy
Willie Obiano succeeded Peter Obi as governor and was widely known for his infrastructure initiatives, security reforms, and welfare programmes. However, his administration was also marred by allegations of financial mismanagement and political tensions within the state.
News of his death is expected to spark reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly among members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the party under which he served.
Family Yet to Announce Burial Plans
As of the time of this report, Obiano’s family has not released an official statement or funeral arrangements.
His passing closes a significant chapter in Anambra politics—one marked by both accomplishments and controversy.
