Nigeria’s former President, Major General (retired) Muhammadu Buhari, has passed away at the age of 82. His death was confirmed on Sunday afternoon by his former spokesman, Garba Shehu, in an official statement shared with the media.
According to family sources and close aides, Buhari died in a London clinic where he had been receiving medical care. His passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political history, as Buhari served as the nation’s head of state first from 1983 to 1985 following a military coup, and later as democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.
Buhari, known for his firm stance on anti-corruption and national security, remained a polarising figure in Nigerian politics throughout his life.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced. It is expected that official national mourning protocols will be observed, in line with his status as a former head of state.
Reactions have begun pouring in from political leaders, former colleagues, and citizens both within and outside Nigeria, remembering Buhari’s contributions and legacy.
