Group Petitions Chief Of Defence Staff, Leo Irabor Over Strangulating Checkpoints In Igboland

A group known as Cultural Credibility Development Initiative (CCID) has written an SOS to Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Leo Irabor over the incessant checkpoints in the South-East and Igboland, Njenje Media News reports.

In a letter signed by CCID’s President, Steve Nwabuko, and its Secretary, A.G. Uwazurike, and made available to Njenje Media, the group noted that a traveler from Lagos to Igboland sees checkpoints every one kilometer up to Benin City and called on the intervention of the Army Chief by reducing the strangulating number of checkpoints by 75 percent.

Read their letter below:

16th December 2021
The Chief of Defense Staff,
Defense Headquarters
Abuja.

Dear Sir,

ATTENTION: GENERAL LEO IRABOR

RE: THE STRANGULATION OF IGBOLAND WITH CHECKPOINTS

We are writing to bring to your attention the suffocation caused by the humongous number of checkpoints in Igboland.

Sir, for the avoidance of doubts, a traveller from Lagos to Igboland sees checkpoints every one kilometer up to the outerring road of Benin City. The traveller from Abuja sees checkpoints every two kilometers until he reaches Delta North fringes. The two sets of travellers then are subjected to the horror of a checkpoint every half a kilometer.

The distance between checkpoints is reduced to 200 meters once a traveler crosses the Niger Bridge. This Niger Bridge obstruction with checkpoints causes 5 Kilometer backlog of cars in a traffic snarl.

Sir, we are presenting the actual situation of things in Igboland. Today it takes about 5 hours to travel from Lagos to the outskirts of Asaba, Delta. But it takes about 6 hours to travel the distance from the outskirts of Asaba to the Niger Bridge. The suffering is unbearable.

Chief A.G. Uwazurike (President).
