A delegation of Igbo traditional priestesses has visited the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Prison, expressing solidarity and prayers for his release.

The visit, which took place on Wednesday, was led by Chief Mrs Oliaku Chika Ibeneme, who holds the title of Nne Mmanwu Igbo Niine (Mother of All Igbo Masquerades). Ibeneme, a former Commissioner for Works and Housing in Anambra State, is widely recognised as a custodian of Igbo traditions. She was accompanied by Lolo Eze Nwanyị Nnewi and other members of the Titled Spiritual Mothers of Igboland.

A statement from IPOB said the priestesses extended “unwavering solidarity and abiding maternal affection” to Kanu, whom they embraced as their “cherished son.” During the visit, the delegation presented gifts, offered prayers, and invoked ancestral blessings, reaffirming the collective support of Igbo mothers, both living and departed.

The statement further revealed that the priestesses plan to engage traditional rulers and spiritual authorities across Nigeria to advocate for Kanu’s release. The initiative aims to foster dialogue, harness spiritual and social influence, and secure his freedom.

Addressing Igbos nationwide, Ibeneme called for united prayers, saying, “We urge all sons and daughters of Ala-Igbo, and people of conscience everywhere, to join in fervent prayers for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s immediate freedom, for the effectiveness of our mothers’ intercessions, and for justice, equity, and harmony to prevail across our land.”
