Nigerians have taken to online platforms to criticise Abdullahi Sule over his decision to run for a senatorial seat in the 2027 elections, despite previously saying he would not seek another office after his tenure.

The governor, who is serving his second and final term, recently declared interest in the Nasarawa North Senatorial District, a move that has drawn backlash from many who accuse him of going back on his word.

In a 2024 appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television, Sule had said he had no intention of contesting for any position after leaving office, even urging that his statement be kept for future reference.

His latest announcement has been widely seen as a reversal, with netizens questioning his credibility and describing it as part of a broader pattern of broken promises among politicians.

Reacting, political commentator Agada Abuh Theo criticised the move, saying it reflects why many citizens no longer trust public officials. Another civic group, ADC Vanguard, said the development highlights a growing disregard for accountability, stressing that public commitments should not be treated lightly.

Similar sentiments were echoed by users online, including Lungu Dogara, who had earlier suggested that many governors often transition to the Senate after leaving office.

The controversy has renewed conversations about integrity in leadership, with many Nigerians urging political figures to honour their promises as the 2027 elections approach.
