Major General Bemgha Koughna, Commander of Sector 2 of the Joint Task Force North West Operation Fansan Yamma and General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, narrowly escaped an ambush by suspected Lakurawa Terrorist Group (LTG) near Mayama Hill in Kebbi State. The convoy, which was en route to visit frontline troops, came under sudden heavy fire from armed insurgents.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, Sector 2 spokesperson, Major General Koughna demonstrated exceptional leadership and tactical skill, successfully repelling the attack and ensuring the safety of his troops. During the encounter, five insurgents were neutralised. Following the ambush, the army conducted a thorough sweep of the area, recovering a substantial cache of weapons and equipment, including one OJC gun, one PKT gun, two AK-47 rifles, four AK-47 magazines, a bandolier of PKT ammunition, several rounds of 12.7mm ammunition, a camel bag containing N840,000, two mobile phones, and five motorcycles.
The spokesperson emphasised that the operation disrupted the insurgents’ plans while sending a clear deterrent message to terrorist groups operating in the North-West. He added that the successful engagement reflects the 8 Division’s commitment to protecting civilians and combating terrorism across the region.
