The Nigerian Railway Corporation says it has received a disturbing report alleging the destruction and removal of railway infrastructure worth several millions of naira along its right of way in Ibadan South West Local Government Area of Oyo State.
According to NRC, the incident occurred on Monday, 2 February 2026, and was allegedly led by the Chairman of Ibadan South West Local Government Council, Kehinde Adeyemi Amanda. He was said to have mobilised thugs, individuals dressed in Nigerian Army uniforms, and Amotekun operatives to the Mile One Ten axis, where the corporation’s fixed assets were vandalised. The chairman reportedly claimed he acted under the directive of the state governor.
The corporation said rails, sleepers, signal poles, billboards, and perimeter fences belonging to NRC tenants were destroyed and taken away, despite the area being a legally protected railway right of way. Attempts by the NRC Police Command to stop the operation were allegedly resisted, forcing officers to withdraw.
NRC described the development as a serious breach of federal railway property and said it is compiling full documentation of the incident. The corporation added that it will pursue all necessary security, administrative, and legal steps to safeguard its infrastructure and prevent further encroachment across the country.
The Managing Director of NRC, Kayode Opeifa, urged the Oyo State Governor to caution the Ibadan South West council chairman to forestall a breakdown of law and order and halt the alleged abuse of the rights of railway workers. He reaffirmed the corporation’s commitment to maintaining peace despite provocation.
