A nurse at Uwani General Hospital in Enugu State has reportedly been handed an indefinite suspension after drawing public attention to poor working conditions at the facility.
The nurse had earlier gone viral after sharing a video highlighting challenges faced during night shifts, including the absence of electricity and running water. The footage triggered widespread reactions among netizens and prompted scrutiny from the Enugu State Government, which subsequently issued queries to the hospital’s management.
Despite claims by the hospital that the issues raised have now been addressed, the nurse says she has been removed from her clinical duties and barred from resuming work.
Speaking on the development, she expressed disappointment over the outcome, insisting that her intention was to call attention to urgent problems affecting both staff and patients.
According to her, “I’m the one who posted the video about the hospital. Sadly, I’ve now been placed on indefinite suspension and taken off my duties.”
She questioned the decision, arguing that raising concerns about critical infrastructure should not attract punishment. “Did we do anything wrong? We only wanted them to notice what was going on, but now we’re facing serious consequences,” she said.
The incident has reignited conversations around whistleblowing in Nigeria’s public institutions, with many expressing concern that individuals who speak out about systemic failures often face disciplinary action instead of protection.
Observers note that such situations may discourage healthcare workers and other professionals from reporting issues that could affect public safety, especially in critical sectors like healthcare.
As reactions continue, the case has become another example in the ongoing debate about accountability, transparency, and the treatment of those who expose institutional shortcomings.
