Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has called on the Federal Government to provide full, sustained funding for the South East Development Commission, describing it as a pivotal tool for reconciliation, inclusion, and long term regional growth.

Speaking at the South East Development Commission Vision 2050 Regional Stakeholder Forum, President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide Senator John Azuta Mbata said the Commission carries deep symbolic and practical importance for a region that has contributed significantly to Nigeria’s progress but continues to grapple with feelings of marginalisation.

Addressing an audience that included Vice President Kashim Shettima, Enugu State Governor Peter Mba, federal lawmakers, ministers, traditional rulers, and development partners, Senator Mbata said the forum’s theme, which focused on a shared path to sustainable prosperity, aligns with the aspirations of the people of the South East.

He noted that despite the region’s reputation for enterprise and innovation, unresolved grievances and perceived exclusion have weakened trust in national structures. He stressed that an effectively funded and empowered Commission could help heal old wounds, rebuild confidence, and strengthen national cohesion.

The Ohanaeze leader appealed for proper utilisation of the Commission’s mandate, stating that visible delivery of development projects would reassure citizens and promote unity. He also challenged stakeholders in the region to provide strong oversight, ensure accountability, and support the Commission with expertise and partnerships that guarantee people centred outcomes.

Senator Mbata expressed hope that the Vision 2050 initiative would mark a turning point, leading to genuine inclusion of the South East in Nigeria’s development agenda and expanding opportunities for young people in the region.
