The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the defection of Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, describing it as an act of cowardice and a demonstration of unprincipled leadership.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, said the move violated political principles and morality, posing a threat to multi-party democracy and democratic consolidation. The PDP argued that abandoning a platform that supported him through multiple election cycles at the first sign of discomfort “is unambiguously an exhibition of unrestrained cowardice, and not a mark of a principled politician.”

The party noted that Fintiri had repeatedly denied any intention to defect, including as recently as last week following a presidential visit to Adamawa. While acknowledging that the governor’s defection is legally permissible, the PDP stressed that it remains a moral and political breach.

Ememobong reminded Fintiri that history and posterity serve as impartial judges of human conduct, recording actions and inactions over time. The statement urged party members in Adamawa to accept the situation with grace, emphasising that the true measure of a leader is revealed during periods of inconvenience and challenge.
