Peter Obi Accuses FG of Fueling Opposition Party Crises Amid Rising Insecurity — Njenje Media
Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has accused the Federal Government of deliberately triggering turmoil across major opposition parties at a time Nigeria is facing escalating security crises, Njenje Media reports.
In a post titled “Now Disgraced Nation” shared on his verified X handle on Wednesday, Obi warned that the country was drifting deeper into chaos while national attention was being diverted to internal party conflicts. The former Anambra State governor referenced a series of disturbing incidents — including the killing of a senior military officer, the kidnapping of 25 female students within one week, and a fresh terror attack in Kwara State — saying these tragedies reinforced global perceptions of Nigeria as a nation in deep distress.
“A few weeks ago, when President Trump described our country as ‘now disgraced,’ many were outraged. Yet, how can we dispute it?” Obi wrote.
He condemned the intensifying internal crises within the PDP, Labour Party, SDP, and other political groups, alleging that the disruptions were “deliberately orchestrated by a government that should be embracing everyone so we can unite in this troubling period.”
Obi contrasted the current situation with the approach of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, recalling how Yar’Adua once directed then-INEC Chairman, Prof. Maurice Iwu, to safeguard the stability of all political parties, not just the ruling party, because strong political institutions are vital for democracy.
“What we witness today is the opposite,” he said. “The current government seems more intent on weakening parties than strengthening our democracy, seeking to fragment the PDP, Labour Party, SDP, and others.”
He emphasised that vibrant democracies respect opposition, protect the electorate’s will during elections, and prioritise inclusive governance for national peace and prosperity.
Obi concluded with his signature message of optimism: “A New Nigeria is Possible.”
