Yesterday, Peter Obi reaffirmed his commitment to health, education, and poverty alleviation during a visit to the Our Lady of Lourdes College of Nursing Sciences in Ihiala, Anambra State. Obi, a former governor and leading figure in Nigerian politics, reviewed the progress of the institution, which has been a beneficiary of his financial support. In a move to further assist their efforts, he announced an additional ₦10 million donation, building on the ₦20 million contribution he made several months ago.

In his address, Obi praised the college for its dedication to nursing education, emphasizing that such investments are key to fostering development in critical areas like healthcare. “I am pleased to see the impact our support is having on the college’s work. It is a testament to the fact that investing in education can truly transform communities,” he said.

Following his visit to the college, Obi proceeded to the Dame Irene Okwuosa Memorial Hospital in Oraifite, a world-class medical facility specializing in cardiovascular care. The hospital, founded by Sir Emeka Okwuosa and in collaboration with the VOOM Foundation, has made significant strides in heart surgeries and other cardiovascular interventions. To date, the facility has successfully completed 117 open-heart surgeries, 2 vascular surgeries, and 10 interventional cardiology procedures.

Obi commended the hospital’s achievements, noting that the facility’s work in saving lives represents a substantial contribution to healthcare in Nigeria. “These milestones not only highlight the importance of healthcare investment but also reinforce the need for ongoing support to ensure such critical services are accessible,” he said.

He expressed his gratitude to Sir Emeka Okwuosa and the VOOM Foundation for their extraordinary efforts, emphasizing the importance of collective action in building a society that meets the needs of the most vulnerable. Obi urged Nigerians to continue working together for a better future, saying, “We must all work hard and sacrifice for a new Nigeria that is possible.”
