Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has paid a condolence visit to the family of late Green Eagles captain and legendary goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, in Lagos. Obi described Rufai as one of the finest players of his generation, noting that his exploits in goal brought pride and joy to millions of Nigerians.

Reflecting on Rufai’s passing, Obi lamented the struggles faced by many Nigerians when confronted with misfortune, stressing the urgent need for a nation that honours service and sacrifice. He said Nigeria must work towards becoming a country where its heroes are celebrated and supported, and where every citizen lives with dignity and security.

“In moments like this, we are reminded that a nation’s greatness is also measured by the value it places on those who gave their all for her,” Obi said. He added that Rufai belonged to the league of true national heroes, urging Nigerians not to allow their memories and sacrifices to fade.

Obi concluded that it was the collective responsibility of citizens and leaders alike to ensure that the contributions of icons like Rufai continue to inspire future generations.
