In a deeply emotional and dignified ceremony, Ndigbo in the United Kingdom under the umbellar of Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK and Ireland came together to honour the life and legacy of late Chief Dr. Sir Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, a man whose contributions to the Igbo nation, Nigeria, and the international community left an indelible mark on those he touched. The Service of Songs and Special Night of Tributes held in London drew prominent figures from the Igbo community, political and business leaders, as well as friends and family who all gathered to celebrate the extraordinary life of a true statesman, philanthropist, and entrepreneur.
The event, hosted by Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK & Ireland, was not only a moment of reflection but also one of celebration, showcasing the immense impact Chief Iwuanyanwu had on his people. His leadership and unwavering dedication to the progress of Ndigbo were evident through the countless testimonies that poured in throughout the evening. Attendees shared heartfelt tributes, recounting their personal experiences with the man who was often referred to as the “pillar of Igbo unity” and a “bridge between the past, present, and future of Ndigbo.”
A Life Dedicated to the Service of Others
Chief Dr. Sir Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who passed away on the 25th of July this year, was a towering figure in Nigerian public life. Born on September 4, 1942, in Atta, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, he rose to prominence not only as a successful businessman but also as a political leader and philanthropist with a deep commitment to the well-being of his people. His influence spanned multiple sectors, including engineering, construction, media, sports, and public service.
At the Service of Songs, the focus was not merely on his achievements but on his character—his humility, generosity, and dedication to uplifting others. His role as a father figure to the younger generation of Igbo professionals, leaders, and entrepreneurs was repeatedly highlighted by those who spoke. Many recalled how he opened doors for young people, providing them with opportunities to excel both within and outside Nigeria.
One of the speakers, Chief Lady Aqueen Ibeto, the Chair of Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK & Ireland, described Iwuanyanwu as “a rare gem, a man who devoted his life to serving Ndigbo and Nigeria at large. His vision for a united and prosperous Igbo nation will continue to inspire generations to come.” Lady Ibeto’s tribute captured the sentiment of many in the room, as those present nodded in agreement, reflecting on Iwuanyanwu’s enduring legacy.
The Special Night of Tributes was a chance for the global Igbo community to pay their respects. Messages of condolence and remembrance were sent from all corners of the world, from prominent Igbo figures and organizations who could not attend in person. It was clear that Iwuanyanwu’s influence extended far beyond the borders of Nigeria, and his work within the diaspora community was celebrated during the event.
At the event, the Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ambassador Mohammed Maidugu, also paid homage to Iwuanyanwu’s legacy, emphasizing his role as a unifying figure in Nigeria’s complex political landscape. “Chief Iwuanyanwu’s contributions to Nigeria’s development, particularly through his advocacy for peace and unity, have left an indelible mark on our nation,” Ambassador said.
Throughout the night, many of the speakers focused on Iwuanyanwu’s tireless advocacy for the Igbo people. As one of the founding members of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex socio-cultural organization representing Igbo interests, Iwuanyanwu was a vocal champion for the rights and progress of his people. He was instrumental in fostering unity among Igbos, both in Nigeria and across the diaspora, and his vision of a strong, united Igbo nation was a central theme in the tributes.
