Tinubu Begins State Visit to Türkiye to Strengthen Bilateral Ties

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has departed Abuja for the Republic of Türkiye on an official state visit scheduled to last from January 26 to January 28, 2026. The visit is aimed at strengthening diplomatic relations and expanding cooperation between Nigeria and Türkiye across key strategic sectors.

The trip follows earlier high level engagements between both countries and builds on existing bilateral ties. Nigerian officials say the visit is designed to deepen collaboration in areas such as security, education, technology, social development, aviation, trade, and investment. It also reflects both countries’ interest in broadening engagement on regional and global issues of mutual concern.

During the visit, President Tinubu is expected to hold bilateral talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Discussions will focus on reviewing current relations and identifying new opportunities for partnership. Several agreements and memoranda of understanding are expected to be signed, covering sectors including energy, defence cooperation, scientific research, media and communications, and technical capacity building.

A business and investment forum has also been scheduled as part of the visit. The forum will bring together government officials and private sector leaders from both countries to explore trade opportunities and encourage increased economic collaboration between Nigerian and Turkish companies.

President Tinubu is accompanied by senior government officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar; the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi SAN; the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd); the National Security Adviser; and other cabinet members overseeing interior affairs, women’s affairs, culture and the creative economy.
