President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Thursday, August 14, for official visits to Japan and Brazil, with a brief stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

According to a statement by Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu will attend the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama, Japan, from August 20 to 22. The conference, themed “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa”, will focus on Africa’s economic transformation, improving the business environment, and building resilient and sustainable societies through private investment and innovation.

While in Japan, the President is expected to take part in plenary sessions, hold bilateral meetings, and engage with chief executives of Japanese companies with investments in Nigeria.

TICAD, initiated in 1993 by the Japanese government and co-hosted by the United Nations, UNDP, African Union Commission, and the World Bank, is held every three years, alternating between Japan and Africa. The last edition took place in Tunisia in 2022.

After the summit, Tinubu will travel to Brasilia on August 24 for a two-day state visit at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He will hold bilateral talks with his host and participate in a business forum aimed at attracting Brazilian investment to Nigeria.

The President will be accompanied by key ministers and senior officials, with both countries expected to explore new cooperation opportunities and sign agreements and memoranda of understanding.
