The Police Service Commission has announced a two week extension of the ongoing recruitment exercise for 50,000 police constables, following an overwhelming response from applicants across the country.
In a joint statement with the Nigeria Police Force, the Commission disclosed that more than 400,000 applications have been received since the recruitment portal opened on 15 December 2025. The application deadline has now been shifted to 8 February 2026 to allow for wider participation.
Speaking on the development, the Head of Protocol and Public Affairs of the Police Service Commission, Mr Torty Njoku Kalu, said the decision was informed by the need to ensure fairness and national balance in the recruitment process.
“We have received an impressive number of applications nationwide, which shows the level of interest Nigerians have in serving their country through the police. However, our review revealed significant disparities in state participation, with some states recording very low application numbers,” Kalu said.
He noted that states such as Adamawa, Benue, and Kaduna recorded high levels of interest, while Lagos, Ogun, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, and Anambra lagged behind.
“The extension is deliberate and strategic. It is to give eligible Nigerians from states with low turnout the opportunity to participate and to ensure equitable representation across the federation,” he added.
The Commission urged all qualified applicants to complete their applications through the official recruitment portal before the new deadline. It also called on state governments, local government councils, traditional institutions, religious bodies, sociocultural organisations, and community leaders to intensify mobilisation efforts.
According to Kalu, “This recruitment exercise must reflect the diversity of Nigeria. We are calling on all stakeholders to help sensitise eligible young Nigerians to take advantage of this extension.”
The Police Service Commission and the Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed their commitment to conducting a fair, transparent, and merit based recruitment process in line with established guidelines.
The recruitment exercise is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the Nigeria Police Force and improve policing capacity across the country.
