Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has raised fresh concerns over Nigeria’s worsening security situation following reports of violence in Katsina State.
He said, “I just read a disturbing report that repentant bandits killed 18 members of a vigilante group during an encounter in Jibia Local Government of Katsina. This reinforces the genuine concern that many who claim repentance do so only as an opportunity to evade justice.”
He described the development as troubling, warning that it highlights persistent doubts about the sincerity of some individuals enrolled in reintegration programmes. The incident has renewed debate around the effectiveness of deradicalisation efforts, particularly in the North West where banditry remains widespread.
The development comes amid broader insecurity across the country. In the North East, a recent bomb blast in Maiduguri has heightened fears of renewed insurgent activity, while kidnappings, armed attacks, and communal clashes continue to affect several regions, placing sustained pressure on security agencies.
