Gazprom Neft, Russia’s energy firm, has revealed the discovery of a new oil field on the Yamal Peninsula, with estimated reserves of 55 million tons of crude oil, marking a major step for Russia’s Arctic energy strategy.

The field, located in the Arctic sector of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area, has been named after renowned geologist Alexei Kontorovich, according to The Caspian Post.

CEO Alexander Dyukov highlighted the extensive untapped potential in the Arctic and Eastern Siberia, noting that “there are still opportunities to uncover new large and super-large hydrocarbon fields” in these and other regions. He confirmed that Gazprom Neft will continue its active geological exploration throughout its operational areas.
