Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, has welcomed the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja which dismissed a suit filed by Mr. Julius Abure against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a statement issued on Friday titled “From the Desk of Senator Nenadi Usman, PhD,” the former minister expressed “profound relief and deep satisfaction” with the decision, describing it as “yet another unambiguous and authoritative affirmation of the rule of law.”
She noted that the ruling in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1523/2025 was in line with the Supreme Court’s April 4 judgment in Appeal No. SC/CV/56/2025, which nullified all previous recognitions of Abure’s leadership. According to her, the Federal High Court “rightly struck out the originating suit for want of jurisdiction,” stressing that the apex court’s pronouncement remains binding on all persons and authorities under Section 287 of the Constitution.
Senator Usman also commended INEC for what she described as its “clarity, courage, and institutional integrity” in affirming before the court that Abure’s tenure, alongside that of the National Executive Committee, expired in June 2024. She highlighted INEC’s sworn testimony that the Commission neither monitored nor recognised the purported Labour Party convention held in Nnewi in March 2024, which it found to be in breach of the law and the party’s constitution.
“This unequivocal position, rendered under oath by the nation’s electoral umpire before a competent court of law, removes all lingering doubts and reinforces the imperative for every member, officer, and stakeholder of our great party to submit, at all times, to the supremacy of our Constitution and the dictates of the rule of law,” she wrote.
Looking ahead, Senator Usman urged members of the party to move beyond what she called a “needless distraction” and focus on rebuilding. “It is time for all members of the Labour Party to recommit ourselves to the urgent task of rebuilding and repositioning our party into the credible, disciplined, and people-centred political movement that Nigerians deserve,” she declared.
Reaffirming her role as Interim National Chairman, she pledged to entrench transparent internal democracy and restore unity and discipline within the Labour Party. “Under my leadership, I remain unwavering in my commitment to ensuring strict compliance with our party’s Constitution, entrenching transparent internal democratic processes, and restoring unity, discipline, and shared purpose as we prepare for the political contests ahead,” she added.
