BREAKING: Supreme court sacks Julius Abure, LP's National Chairman
Abuja, April 4, 2025 – In a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court of Nigeria has removed Barr. Julius Abure, from his position as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), overturned a previous decision by the Court of Appeal in Abuja. The unanimous judgment, delivered by a five-member panel on Friday, has sent ripples through Nigeria’s political landscape, raising questions about the future of the Labour Party and its prominent figures, including Peter Obi.
The Supreme Court held that the Court of Appeal lacked the jurisdiction to declare Abure as the National Chairman, as the core issue of the case revolved around the party’s internal leadership—a matter the apex court ruled falls outside judicial purview. The court emphasized that leadership disputes within political parties are internal affairs, a stance consistent with prior judicial precedents on party autonomy. Additionally, the court noted that Abure’s tenure as chairman had already expired, further invalidating his claim to the position.
The ruling came in response to an appeal filed by Senator Nenadi Usman and another individual, which the Supreme Court deemed meritorious. Usman, who chairs the Labour Party’s national caretaker committee, had earlier sought clarification from the Supreme Court on the ongoing leadership dispute, citing ambiguities in the Appeal Court’s ruling. Meanwhile, a cross-appeal by Abure and his faction of the Labour Party was dismissed for lacking merit.
The decision has sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, particularly on X, where users expressed confusion, frustration, and speculation about the broader implications.
