The Nigerian Army has issued a fresh security warning over the possible presence of multiple suicide bombers in Maiduguri, urging residents to avoid crowded areas as threats remain high.

The alert comes after Monday evening’s deadly attacks, which killed 23 people and injured 108 others, sending fear across the city.

In a statement released Tuesday, Lt. Col. Sanni Uba, spokesperson for Operation Hadin Kai, said the coordinated bombings deliberately targeted busy public locations to cause maximum casualties and panic. The explosions reportedly occurred around 7:05 p.m. during Iftar, when many people had gathered in public spaces.

Authorities believe the attackers, suspected to be members of Boko Haram, used improvised explosive devices to strike at peak hours. Uba described the attacks as calculated and “cowardly,” noting that civilians were the primary targets.

He also revealed that early intelligence suggests additional bombers may still be within Maiduguri, raising concerns about further coordinated attacks. In response, security forces have intensified patrols, surveillance, and counter-explosive operations across the city to locate suspects and prevent more incidents.

Emergency responders, including teams from National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), quickly evacuated victims to medical facilities such as the General Hospital, Specialist Hospital, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for urgent care.

While assuring residents that efforts are ongoing to restore stability, the army urged the public to remain highly alert, steer clear of large gatherings, and report any suspicious movements or unattended items to security agencies immediately.
