A video circulating online has raised serious concerns after a man identified as “Shawarma,” suspected to be a political enforcer, allegedly claimed responsibility for the killing of 32 people in Ibadan, Oyo State.
In the footage, the individual, seen among a group believed to be political loyalists, made the remarks during what appeared to be a gathering of supporters of the All Progressives Congress. When asked about his actions, he alleged that the killings occurred in self defence during violent confrontations, further claiming he was neither arrested nor prosecuted despite the incidents.
He also expressed support for Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections, a statement that has intensified public concern over the intersection of politics and violence.
Reacting to the development, the Oyo State Police Command denied any knowledge of the suspect or the claims made in the video. Police spokesperson Ayanlade Olayinka said there is no record of such an individual being arrested by the command.
However, the police confirmed that a full investigation has been launched, employing digital forensics and other tools to verify the claims and identify those involved. Authorities have also appealed to the public for useful information that could aid in locating the suspect.
The incident has renewed concerns about political violence and impunity in Nigeria, particularly as early alignments and mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to take shape.
