The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a security advisory warning American citizens about a potential terrorist threat targeting U.S. facilities and schools affiliated with the United States across the country. The advisory, published on the embassy’s website, urges citizens to take heightened precautions and remain vigilant while in Nigeria.
The embassy specifically highlighted the need for caution when travelling to the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, and American-affiliated schools. While details about the source, timing, or nature of the threat were not disclosed, the advisory stressed the importance of careful movement and increased awareness, particularly near U.S. diplomatic and educational institutions.
Recommended safety measures include varying travel routes and times, keeping a low profile, being observant of surroundings, and reviewing personal security plans. Citizens were also advised to stay alert in public spaces, avoid crowds and demonstrations, and familiarise themselves with emergency exits in buildings. The embassy highlighted that simple precautions can significantly reduce personal risk.
The notice comes shortly after the embassy cancelled all visa appointments scheduled for Wednesday, March 4, 2026, citing concerns over potential protests in Abuja. The embassy stated the cancellation was “due to the potential for protests in Abuja,” reinforcing the need for American citizens to remain cautious while in the Federal Capital Territory and other parts of Nigeria.
