Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the former British royal, has been arrested and is currently in police custody on suspicion of misconduct in public office, Thames Valley Police confirmed on Thursday. The arrest comes amid an ongoing investigation into allegations involving the sharing of confidential material with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Police carried out searches at several locations, including addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk, as well as at the Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park, where Andrew previously resided. Vehicles believed to be police cars were also seen arriving at the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk earlier in the day.
King Charles expressed concern over his brother’s arrest, stating he “learned with the deepest concern” and emphasising that “the law must take its course.” Buckingham Palace and the King were reportedly not informed ahead of the arrest.
Andrew, who turns 66 today, has previously denied any wrongdoing related to Epstein. Authorities are focusing on material contained in the Epstein files related to Andrew’s activities while serving as a trade envoy, rather than the accusations made by Virginia Giuffre.
The former prince was stripped of his royal title last year due to his association with Epstein and the ongoing controversy surrounding sexual assault allegations, which he continues to deny.
Investigation remains ongoing as police assess all relevant information.
