A visitor was arrested on Sunday while trying to sneak drugs into Agodi Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ibadan, highlighting ongoing security challenges in Nigeria’s correctional facilities.

The incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. on February 25, when prison officers conducting a routine inspection of food parcels discovered hidden quantities of suspected Colorado and hemp. The drugs had been cleverly concealed in the packages brought by the unnamed visitor.

Prison authorities immediately detained the suspect and handed him over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and potential prosecution.

A senior official at the custodial centre, speaking anonymously due to the case’s sensitivity, praised the officers for their vigilance. The official noted that food parcels are a common route for contraband and emphasized the importance of staff alertness in maintaining safety within the facility.

Like many Nigerian prisons, Agodi Custodial Centre faces ongoing challenges with drug infiltration, which can fuel addiction, violence, and corruption among inmates. Officials have called for stricter visitor protocols and improved screening measures to prevent such incidents.

The NDLEA has not yet issued a formal statement, but sources indicate the case is being treated with urgency amid rising concerns over drug trafficking in the region.
