Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has praised President Bola Tinubu for stepping in to address the prolonged political turmoil in Rivers State. He described the President’s move as timely and responsible, noting that it was aimed at restoring calm and preventing further division.

The intervention came during a late-night meeting in Abuja, where President Tinubu brought Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Wike, and other influential Rivers stakeholders together for closed-door discussions. Although the full details were not disclosed, insiders said the talks centred on resolving the deep political friction between Wike and Fubara that has destabilised governance in the state.

Following the meeting, Governor Fubara was seen visiting Wike’s residence in Guzape, Abuja. The visit has been widely interpreted as a signal that both men may be ready to deescalate their conflict. Some accounts claim the governor assured the President that he would avoid moves considered confrontational, raising cautious optimism that hostilities may reduce.

The political dispute, which erupted soon after Governor Fubara took office, has led to factional divisions in the State House of Assembly, impeachment threats, legal battles, and repeated institutional disruptions. Political analysts link the crisis to competing interests over party dominance and control of state machinery. President Tinubu’s latest intervention is seen as an attempt to stabilise the situation and curtail the risk of further unrest.
