Nigeria at 65: Ohanaeze Ndigbo Calls for Reflection, Release Of Nnamdi Kanu, Justice and National Rebirth

Awka, October 1st, 2025

As Nigeria marks her 65th Independence Anniversary, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has urged Nigerians to see the occasion as more than just a celebration of age, but as an opportunity for sober reflection, renewal, and a new beginning for the country.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr Ezechi Chukwu, made available to Njenje Media News, Ohanaeze extended warm felicitations to Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, noting that the milestone should inspire unity, equity, and justice in the collective pursuit of a prosperous and inclusive nation.

Speaking on the occasion, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator Azuta Mbata, stressed that Nigeria’s 65 years of independence have been marked by resilience but also marred by deep-rooted challenges.

“Nigeria at 65 should not just be a celebration of age, but a sober reflection on the quality of life of its citizens. For Ohanaeze and the Igbo nation at large, we remain deeply committed to the ideals of unity, love, peace, justice, and national development, but not at the cost of our dignity or continued marginalisation,” Senator Mbata stated.

The group lamented that despite the immense contributions of Ndigbo to Nigeria’s socio-economic growth in commerce, education, innovation, and culture, they still face systemic exclusion, unhealed wounds of history, and shrinking political space.

Ohanaeze renewed its call for the immediate and unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, describing his continued detention as “a blot on the conscience of the nation” and a test of Nigeria’s commitment to justice and equity.

The statement also condemned the targeted destruction of Igbo-owned businesses and investments, particularly in Lagos and other regions, which it described as “unjustifiable economic sabotage” that undermines national unity and progress.

“No nation can endure indefinitely when a section of its population feels alienated or reduced to second-class citizens. Nigeria must rise to a new dawn, where every child—whether born in Aba, Jos, Calabar, Katsina, Enugu or Kano—can aspire to lead, to thrive and to belong,” Mbata emphasized.

Calling for urgent constitutional reforms, Ohanaeze stressed that restructuring the federation is not only a political necessity but also a moral imperative for lasting peace and development.

The statement urged Nigerian leaders to embrace governance driven by justice, empathy, and fairness, while also appealing to Ndigbo to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and resilient in the face of challenges.

Reaffirming its commitment to dialogue, mutual respect, and genuine federalism, Ohanaeze stated that it is ready to collaborate with other ethnic nationalities and leaders of thought who share its vision of a fair and forward-looking Nigeria.

As Nigeria celebrates her 65th Independence Day, Ohanaeze Ndigbo called on citizens to make the anniversary a turning point for national rebirth rather than another ritual celebration.

“Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Long live Ndigbo. Long live Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.”
