Fresh political upheavals are unfolding in Adamawa State as Speaker Wesley Bathiya led 14 other lawmakers to resign from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), intensifying speculation over Governor Umaru Fintiri’s expected defection.
The mass resignation follows reports that Governor Fintiri is preparing to leave the PDP for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), in what analysts see as a strategic move ahead of the 2027 elections. Insiders say the coordinated departure by the Speaker and lawmakers is a preemptive effort to consolidate political structures and facilitate the governor’s anticipated transition.
Last week, SaharaReporters reported that the APC postponed planned state congresses in Adamawa to accommodate Fintiri and his political team, a gesture interpreted as easing his entry into the party without internal resistance. The postponement raised concerns among APC loyalists about the sacrifice of internal democratic processes for a high-profile defection.
With the Speaker and a majority of the 25-member House of Assembly formally leaving the PDP, the chamber now appears dominated by the APC. Build Bauna, representing Lamurde Constituency, remains unaccounted for, having neither publicly commented nor appeared during the plenary where resignations were announced, leaving his political position unclear.
Observers say the development signals a near-total collapse of the PDP’s influence in the Assembly, reinforcing expectations that Governor Fintiri’s defection is imminent. While official confirmation from the governor’s camp was not available at filing, sources from both parties indicate these moves are part of a deliberate political recalibration likely to reshape Adamawa’s power dynamics in the coming months.
