The medical students of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University on 1st July 2022 completed their 5th MBBS examination which brought the journey of 6 years to a successful end. The graduands who were obviously in high spirit celebrated the end of a wonderful beginning
The first set of 60 students had gained admission to read medicine at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojuwu University (COOU) in 2007 during the administration of His Excellency, Peter Obi, Former Governor of Anambra State and Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 Presidential elections. Prior to that time, the program had suffered from lack of accreditation.
Peter Obi Administration conceived and built, from scratch, the first state-owned Teaching Hospital, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, COOUTH Awka.
By the end of his tenure in 2014, more than twelve (12) health institutions, including two hospitals, had secured accreditation; when Obi took off in 2006, no health institution in Anambra State was duly accredited.
Through partnership with the Voluntary Agencies such as the Church in the Health sector, Obi Government funded the transformation of -:
a: Iyienu Hospital, Ogidi;
b: Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala;
c: St Charles Borromeo Hospital, Onitsha;
d: Holy Rosary Hospital, Waterside, Onitsha; and
e: St. Joseph Hospital, Adazi-Nnukwu.
His Government also built the Joseph Nwilo Heart Centre in St. Joseph, Adazi-Nnukwu, where Open Heart Surgery operations are now being performed. By October 2018, over 200 indigent Nigerians had received open heart surgical treatment at the Hospital. The Hospital founders have also established the first African regional cardiothoracic surgery database
Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State, earlier in June 2022, inaugurated the construction of the Coordinated Wholesale Centre for Pharmaceutical and Allied Products in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of the state
According to him, the construction of the centre is in accordance with the National Drug Distribution Guidelines. “This project is in line with the plan to build a livable and prosperous homeland in Anambra state. The Oba International drug market will be revived to help form the ecosystem for a new technology driven smart city in Oba. At completion, the centre will have a perimeter fence, three entrance gates, 2,516 standard shops, and 888 offices. It will also provide offices for the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria and other regulatory bodies. Other components of the centre include, administrative building, Police post as well as fire station,” he said.
The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the university’s teaching hospital Dr. Lawrence Ikeako in 2016 had recalled that while presenting the graduates to the teaching hospital in Awka that the students “went through agonising moment due to accreditation rigours that the institution passed through since 2009
Ikeako said he was nevertheless happy that the institution has produced the first set of medical doctors after about 10 years that the journey began.
According to him, the dream of getting accreditation from the Nigerian Medical and Dental Council was made possible by the Anambra government under Mr. Peter Obi and his successor Chief Willie Obiano who ensured that it was a reality.
“If you place your patient first, all other things will follow,” he added, saying that internship programme for new doctors remained a challenge in the country and called on state and federal
government to embark on massive expansion of existing facilities.
He noted that full residency programme of the Teaching Hospital that would accommodate 24 interns would commence in 2016.
