The Attorney General of Anambra State, Tobechukwu Nweke (SAN), has arraigned eight pastors before the High Court of Anambra State over allegations of hiring individuals to act out fake healings and deliverance sessions, commonly referred to as “arrangee” miracles.
The clerics were remanded in custody following their arraignment, while the cases were adjourned until 15 June 2026 for hearing and consideration of bail applications.
According to the charges filed under case numbers A/65C/26, A/55C/26, A/63C/26, A/64C/26, A/57C/26, A/60C/26, A/58C/26 and A/61C/26, the defendants were accused of wielding fake supernatural powers, using places of worship to commit crimes contrary to Sections 18(3) and 19(1) of the Anambra State Homeland Security Law, 2025, and obtaining by false pretence contrary to Section 3(1) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, LFN 2006.
Some of the pastors were charged alongside individuals alleged to have helped recruit people who were paid to pose as beneficiaries of miraculous healings or deliverance.
The prosecution alleged that the pastors received financial rewards from members of the public through the purported miracles.
Documents filed with the charges reportedly include video-recorded confessions by the defendants, with flash drives attached as exhibits. Nweke SAN confirmed that the alleged confessional statements form part of the evidence the state intends to rely on during trial.
He said the prosecution is part of the state government’s efforts to curb the exploitation of vulnerable members of the public through staged miracles, similar to actions being taken against fraudulent native doctors.
