The Department of State Services (DSS) has arraigned five suspects allegedly connected to the kidnapping of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and another passenger in Imo State.

The suspects appeared before the Justice Oputa State High Court in Owerri following their arrests during intelligence-driven operations in Rivers and Abia states.

Their arraignment represents a significant development in the investigation into the October 1 abduction, which sparked concerns about the safety of young Nigerians travelling to commence their national service.

However, the suspects remain innocent until proven guilty, and the allegations against them must be established through the court process.

Gunmen Abducted Prospective Corps Members Along Highway

The incident occurred on October 1, 2026, near Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.

The victims were travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to their respective NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states when armed men intercepted their vehicles along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway and abducted them.

The incident prompted a coordinated search operation involving security agencies, while the victims’ families anxiously awaited information about their whereabouts.

The 20 prospective corps members and the additional passenger were eventually rescued on October 7 during a security operation at Amakohia-Ubi in Owerri West Local Government Area.

Following their rescue, the victims were taken to the DSS hospital in Owerri for medical attention and necessary examinations.

Reports indicate that security operatives arrested the five suspects during intelligence-led operations conducted between October 10 and 14.

The operations were carried out in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and Aba, Abia State, with the DSS receiving support from the military, police and other security personnel.

Three other suspected gang members reportedly escaped during the operations despite sustaining gunshot injuries.

Security agencies have continued efforts to track down the fleeing suspects and identify other individuals who may have participated in the abduction.

However, the available reports did not disclose the identities of the five suspects arraigned or specify the allegations against each individual.

Ransom Allegations Sparked Controversy

The kidnapping attracted further attention following reports that the abductors demanded ransom payments from the victims’ families.

Earlier media reports indicated that the kidnappers initially demanded ₦1 billion before reportedly reducing the amount to ₦5 million per victim, bringing the total ransom demand for the 20 prospective corps members to ₦100 million.

Some parents subsequently disclosed that their families had contributed money in an attempt to secure the release of their children. Reports also indicated that some of the contributions were later returned.

However, Imo State Commissioner of Police, Audu Bosso, said he was unaware of any ransom payment. He maintained that sustained pressure from security operatives forced the kidnappers to release their captives.

The available reports have not conclusively established the circumstances surrounding the reported contributions or whether any money was eventually paid to the abductors.

Rescue Raises Questions About Highway Security

Despite the successful rescue of the victims, the incident has renewed concerns about the safety of travellers using major highways across southeastern Nigeria.

The abduction of the prospective corps members while they were travelling to their assigned orientation camps also highlighted the risks young Nigerians face when moving between states to fulfil their national service obligations.

The arraignment is expected to advance the judicial process, allowing the court to examine the evidence and determine the alleged involvement of the suspects.

Meanwhile, security agencies are expected to continue searching for the suspects who escaped and investigating whether additional individuals were involved in the crime.

For the victims and their families, the next stage will be the pursuit of justice through a transparent legal process that establishes the facts, holds anyone found guilty accountable and protects the rights of the accused.

The incident also reinforces the importance of sustained security operations along major highways to protect travellers and prevent similar abductions in the future.
