Former Super Eagles midfielder Henry Nwosu has died at the age of 62.
His death was confirmed on Saturday morning by former teammate and 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner Segun Odegbami through a message shared on his media platforms. Odegbami said Nwosu passed away at about 4:00 a.m. at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where he had been receiving intensive care since Wednesday.
According to Odegbami, Nwosu had spent five days in the hospital fighting for his life before his death. He described the late footballer, whom he fondly called the “Youngest Millionaire,” as a cherished member of Nigeria’s football family.
Nwosu, who hailed from Imo State, was the youngest member of Nigeria’s squad that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations, helping the then Green Eagles secure the country’s first continental title on home soil. He was widely admired for his creativity, vision and technical skill in midfield.
After retiring from professional football, Nwosu remained involved in the sport as a coach and mentor, contributing to the development of younger players in Nigerian football.
His passing comes just days after the death of former Super Eagles coach Adegboye Onigbinde, who led Nigeria to the 2002 FIFA World Cup and died on March 9 at the age of 88.
