Today’s celebration of International Day of Education was marked in Abuja with renewed government emphasis on youth-led, skills-driven learning initiatives.

The Federal Government used the occasion to highlight strategic plans for strengthening educational systems that better prepare young Nigerians for the modern workforce.

Officials reiterated commitments to inclusive learning, digital literacy, and vocational training programmes that align with evolving labour market demands.

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu delivered a keynote address advocating increased investment in education as a foundation for sustainable development.

She stressed that equitable access to quality education remains essential for unlocking Nigeria’s demographic dividend, given the country’s rapidly growing youth population.

Education experts attending the event echoed calls for reforms that prioritise teacher training, curriculum modernisation, and improved infrastructure across primary and secondary schools.

Policy analysts note that Nigeria faces longstanding challenges in education outcomes, including low completion rates and gaps in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) learning, which hamper competitiveness.

Government representatives acknowledged these hurdles and pledged continued engagement with private sector partners to expand opportunities for skills acquisition.

Community groups and civil society stakeholders at the event emphasised that aligning education with economic opportunities could significantly reduce youth unemployment and drive innovation across Nigeria’s emerging sectors.
