The Gawuna Campaign Coordinating Team has dismissed reports that some prominent members of the political camp of former Kano State governor, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, have defected from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The campaign team, in a statement signed by its Director General and Chairman, Dist. Sen. Saleh Adamu Kwaru, said the individuals being described as “Gawuna’s Team” had ceased to be part of the official political structure associated with Gawuna since June.
The team said the individuals left following the rejection of what it described as “self serving” personal demands by Gawuna.
According to the statement, the group had also initiated contacts with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) without Gawuna’s knowledge or approval in an attempt to persuade him to accept the party’s governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.
It alleged that the group promised that the ADC would finance Gawuna’s campaign, provide legislative opportunities for members of the group and offer other political incentives.
The campaign team said the move eventually collapsed, after which some members of the group began exploring the possibility of returning to the APC.
It added that three members of the group remained within the NDC, while others continued to seek alternative political platforms.
The Gawuna camp maintained that the activities of the group were driven by personal political interests rather than loyalty to Gawuna or any shared political ideology.
The campaign team also sought to reassure NDC supporters and other political stakeholders that its campaign structures and operational systems for the 2027 elections were established independently of the individuals in question.
It said their departure would therefore have no significant impact on its preparations for the elections, adding that there was no concern that sensitive political information could be used against the campaign.
The statement further claimed that the Gawuna political camp had continued to attract prominent politicians, community leaders and grassroots mobilisers across Kano State.
According to the campaign team, the continued influx of new supporters had more than compensated for the departure of the group and strengthened its preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The team urged Kano residents, political observers and the media to disregard reports linking the group with Gawuna or the official NDC political structure.
It said its attention remained focused on providing what it described as purposeful leadership and progress for Kano State.
