The Ghana Police Service has arrested one suspected member of a robbery syndicate and shot dead two others during an operation to foil planned attacks on banks in Labone, Accra.
At about 10:45am on Thursday, 13th August 2026, the Police received intelligence that a gang of robbers was preparing to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank, all located in Labone.
A police team was immediately deployed to the area, where the suspected robbers were spotted in vehicles parked near the banks.
On seeing the Police, one of the vehicles sped away in an attempt to escape. Officers pursued the vehicle and arrested Augustine Okechuku Maazi, while the other occupant managed to flee.
Occupants of the second vehicle also attempted to escape while firing at the Police. Officers returned fire, resulting in the deaths of two suspects.
The Police recovered two vehicles, a Toyota Highlander with registration number GS-1434-18 and a Hyundai Tucson with registration number GS 7915-17, as well as a blow pistol.
Augustine Okechuku Maazi remains in custody and is assisting with investigations. The bodies of the deceased suspects have been deposited at the morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
The Ghana Police Service commended the response team for successfully foiling the planned robbery attempt and expressed appreciation to members of the public who continue to provide credible information about criminal activities.
