Abuja, Nigeria– In a significant move that promises to usher in a new era of development and rehabilitation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) Bill into law. This landmark decision has been met with widespread approval and gratitude from the South-East geopolitical zone, known for its enterprise and entrepreneurship.
Speaking on behalf of the region, Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, expressed heartfelt appreciation for the President’s support and foresight in signing the bill. “This is not just a legislative victory but a historic milestone for the South-East geopolitical zone,” Kalu stated. “The commission, with funds allocation from the Federation Account, will oversee the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads, houses, and other infrastructural damages suffered by the zone as a result of the civil war. It will also tackle ecological problems and other related environmental or developmental challenges in the South-East States, including Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, and Ebonyi.”
The South-East Development Commission is set to address several critical issues that have long hindered the region’s growth. The commission’s mandate includes the rehabilitation of war-damaged infrastructure, addressing ecological concerns such as erosion, and providing a framework for sustainable development across the South-East.
President Tinubu’s signing of the SEDC Bill signifies a commitment to equitable development and recognition of the unique challenges faced by the South-East. The commission is expected to foster economic growth, improve living conditions, and restore the environmental balance in the region.
As the South-East looks forward to the operationalization of the SEDC, there is renewed hope and optimism that the region’s long-standing infrastructural and environmental challenges will finally be addressed. The establishment of the commission marks a new chapter in the South-East’s journey towards recovery and sustainable development.
