The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revised the timetable for the 2027 general elections, rescheduling the presidential and National Assembly polls to January, and the governorship and state assembly elections to February. The Osun State governorship election has also been moved to August 15, 2026.
In a statement on Wednesday, Malam Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, said the revisions follow changes introduced by the Electoral Act, 2026. The commission noted that the repeal of the Electoral Act, 2022 and the enactment of the 2026 Act, which altered statutory timelines for pre-election and electoral activities, required a review and realignment of the schedule to ensure compliance.
Under the revised timetable, the presidential and National Assembly elections are now set for Saturday, January 16, 2027, while the governorship and state assembly elections will take place on Saturday, February 6, 2027. Party primaries, including dispute resolution, are scheduled from April 23 to May 30, 2026. Campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections will begin on August 19, 2026, and for governorship and state assembly elections on September 9, 2026.
INEC emphasised that all campaigns must end 24 hours before election day and warned political parties to strictly adhere to this timeline. The revised timetable has been published on INEC’s official website and communication platforms.
The commission also confirmed that the Osun State governorship election, previously scheduled for August 8, 2026, has been postponed to August 15, 2026.
