INEC Suspends Recognition of David Mark-Led ADC Leadership Pending Court Decision

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced it will no longer recognise or engage with either the David Mark-led or Nafiu Bala-led factions of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), following a review of the Court of Appeal judgment delivered on March 12, 2026.

INEC stated that it will not monitor any meetings, congresses, or conventions of either group until the matter before the Federal High Court is resolved. The commission also confirmed it will remove the names of David Mark and other members of his National Working Committee from the INEC portal.

The decision comes after competing claims from both factions over the leadership of the ADC. David Mark’s faction assumed control following resignations by the previous executive, while Nafiu Bala, the former vice chairman, argued he should automatically lead the party. Bala challenged Mark’s committee in court, prompting a series of motions and appeals.

The Court of Appeal dismissed Mark’s appeal and issued preservatory orders to ensure the Federal High Court proceedings are not undermined. INEC has now aligned its actions with these orders, maintaining the status quo ante bellum and refraining from recognising or engaging with any faction until the court delivers a final verdict.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to neutrality and adherence to judicial directives, urging all parties to avoid actions that could disrupt the electoral timetable for the 2027 general elections.
